Interview with Kevin Scott Allen

Published 2015-11-07.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Knowing that today, as is the case every day, I will learn something new and/or meet someone new.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Thinking about what I'm going to write next!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Browsing through online catalogs.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was about an elf with magic shoes. It was written in French, as that was the language I was speaking at the time. It is still one of my favorite pieces of writing.
What is your writing process?
I sit at my computer and write out a sentence. I drink a sip from my coffee, then get up and walk around. After I've taken five steps the next thing I need to write comes to me and I rush back to the computer to get it down. I have worn out a path from my computer about ten feet in any direction.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I remember the first one that had an impact on me was the Narnia Chronicles by C.S. Lewis.
How do you approach cover design?
I think of what inspired me to write this particular book and how I can best express that in a picture.
Describe your desk
Cluttered.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Switzerland, California, Washington, D.C., Virginia, North Carolina and New Jersey. I learned at an early age to think abstractly and on many dimensions as I dealt with vastly different cultures and languages from childhood on. I was never settled as a child and this made me write to center myself and find a place to belong. I belonged in my writings.
When did you first start writing?
Age 8
