Interview with Marisa Oldham

Published 2014-01-15.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in both Southern and Northern California. I think that coming from cities like Hollywood and San Francisco I was exposed to an array of characters that have influenced some of the traits I write into my characters. Rock Stars - Models - Photographers - Art Gallery Owners.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first "book" which I now know was more of a novella, when I was 15 years old. I only shared it with my sister and my closest friends and over the past 23 years I have lost the original draft. More recently, I started writing in September 2012.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Entertaining people. There is no stronger joy than having one of your readers walk up to you with a huge grin stretching from ear to ear when they're holding a copy of your latest book. That moment when you realize that the look of excitement they have in their eyes is comparable to the feelings of excitement you're having that someone is hold a book you wrote in their hands. It's amazing.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are the reason that not a day goes by that I don't think about what I'm currently writing, editing, or marketing. I never in a million years thought I was share my writing outside my family and inner circle of friends.
What are you working on next?
I am currently writing a spin-off novel to the Falling series where the main character is Grace's sister Michelle. I had so many requests to write a book about Michelle. I am about 168 pages into writing and already over 50,000 words.
Who are your favorite authors?
Gillian Flynn, Jennifer McMahon, John Greene, and Sylvia Day. Flynn is by far my most favorite of them all. She has a wickedly sick way of weaving her tale and she's a gosh darn genius!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I read or listen to books. I'm also a professional photographer so I shoot a lot. I work full time doing various clerical duties. I love to watch movies and TV shows.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I use audible to search for books that have the highest ratings, read the synopsis, and then decide if I want the book. I also read a lot of other indie-author books because I believe as a community we have to support each other. I'm in a group on Goodreads called Authors & Reviewers and I get most of my indie books there.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Absolutely! I could probably re-write it. It was called The Case of Statutory about a young high school student who falls in love with a twenty-five year old man and things got pretty crazy once her parents found out. Oh that was so long ago...
What is your writing process?
I'm an organic writer. I think about the main theme of my book and start to develop plots in my head, but I never outline. I just write. Sometimes I even surprise myself when I come up with some of the plots in my books. I've heard Gillian Flynn say she writes this way as well.
