Interview with Max M Power

Published 2013-11-15.
When did you first start writing?
I write a few different genres.
My first poem was written when I was 15, after the first girl I kissed broke my heart.
My first short story, outside of school assignment came from the deep emotions I felt on 9/11. Those emotions opened the flood gates to my creative side and I have not been able to close those gates.
My first novel came after receiving a letter from a ghost from my past.
What are you working on next?
Sssshhh... it's a secret, but if you really want to know feel free to email me.
I have so many iron's in the fire and they are constantly changing it's hard to pin point just one thing.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Good or bad, without them I'm not an author.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Honestly, it's hearing from my readers. Without them I'm just wasting paper and ink. They make it worth the effort and when they tell me how much something I wrote touched them, that's the joy for me.
Who are your favorite authors?
Charles M. Schulz & Bill Waterson. I could easily relate to everyone in their strip. They were my best friends growing up. They taught me that there is nothing wrong with being different as long as YOU are happy and having fun. Happy dance and root beer is the best cure all for anything. I would not have survived adolescence if not for them.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Cracker Jackson - It speaks to my soul
Star Wars - Because I am a HUGE nerd
Ender's Game & Shadow - Something about those books captures my attention and every time I read it it's like reading it for the first time.
The Hunt for Red October - The movie was the first one my Uncle in the Navy took me to see. I fell in love with the Navy from there. He gave me his personal copy from when he was on a sub.
Mutation - First book my grandma gave me
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Depending on the weather and time of day.
Hot outside - Inside watching TV
Cool and clear - Fishing or sitting outside reading a book.
Cold and raining - Reading
No matter what music is always playing in the background. I can not live without music.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
See Spot Run. I thought all panda bears went jogging through the city until I was told the truth a year later.
First book I read that impacted my life was Cracker Jackson. I was in the fourth grade when I read it and it taught me to help protect those being abused. I still have my original copy, being held together by tape, but I read it once a year cover to cover.
How do you approach cover design?
I am a photographer as well. I decided to only use pictures I have either taken personally or have had someone draw for me, in the case of The Guardian Series.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I LOVE TO READ! I know publishers are in the business of making money but at what cost to the reader. All my life I have had to live on a budget and would have to choose between feeding my body or my mind. Books were becoming to expensive and when ebooks came along they were the same if not more than print, and for what, data that cost nothing. I swore I would NOT to that to my readers. Smashwords has allowed me to keep cost as low as possible for my readers and I am thankful for that everyday.
Who has been the most influential person in your life? Most inspirational?
I would not be a writer if I wasn't a reader and I have two people to thank for that. My Grandma Margret and my Uncle Herman. Because of those two my mind never starved for the written word. Once a month I would get books from them, either money sent to buy books in school or actual books they collected from co workers and mailed to me.
You have a book, Lost Inside, that touches on depression and Bipolar. Do you think many people recognize or understand your writing about Bipolar Disorder?
That answer is two fold. Those that do not have it think my writing about it is stupid and bad mouth me for it. Those that DO have BP are thankful to me for being able to express how they feel. While it may not be anything special it means something to them and to me, that's all that really matters.
Most advice authors give to new authors is, "Write what you know" and "Stick to one genre" but you don't do either, why?
That really is great advice but my A.D.D. won't allow me to do that. That's like asking me to cook and eat the exact same thing every meal for the rest of my life. I will not read just one genre so I can not write just one. I know it's the norm in the publishing but I'm not normal.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Honestly, self promotion works best. No one will market you better than you. If I see someone using an ereader I walk up and ask them what are they reading and hand them a business card. I tell them if they are willing to give me read that I would send them an ebook of their choice for free. This usually gets them to read more than one book of mine. Never overlook the power of free giveaways.
Describe your desk
what desk? My lap is my desk for the most part. I use a pad and pen, the old fashion way, then type it up later.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Stockton, CA, where I was born and in Houston, TX, where I still live today. In both cities I grew up in the ghetto. The only place I was allowed to go, besides church and school, was the library. I had no problem with that. Reading turned me into a writer. Discovering Langston Hughes helped turn me into a poet.
What's the story behind your latest book?
A weird dream. Most of my story ideas come to me after weird dreams I have when I eat bad Chinese food. Maybe that's why I'm always eating Chinese food.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I use a website epubbud. They show me discounted or free books for download.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Anything Android.
What is your writing process?
To always carry a pen and paper with me and when something pops in my head write it down. I never force it and sometimes it comes in whispers and sometimes I can't shut it up.
What do you read for pleasure?
Star Wars right now. I have vowed to read all the books in order within a 2yr period. I had no idea there are over 100 books.
