Interview with Renee Burke

Published 2014-05-20.
What was your favorite chapter to write and why?
The first chapter and the last chapter of any book! The first chapter always brings the excitement of embarking on a new journey. The last one is always intense and fulfilling because the story is near completion.
What do you like to do when you're not writing?
It depends on the season. I love to go, go, go - to kids' ballgames, hiking, and the beach and lake trips - when it's warm and summery. Winter means lots of time watching home and cooking shows (which do me absolutely no good).
If you couldn't be an author, what would your ideal career be?
I think editing would be my second choice. I LOVE when authors turn a phrase or write beautifully. I can't seem to stop myself from mentally editing as I read for pleasure. My background is in English, and I may eventually toss my hat into the ring as an editor. Besides writing, editing would be an ideal job for me.
Do you ever have writer's block?
I try not to let myself get away with it. I am a note taker which means I can go back to my notes and pull details from there to keep going. That sometimes means scenes need lots of revision and an infusion of personality, but it keeps my story progressing. If I can get that first draft down, no matter how bad it is, I can always revise to spice it up.
What's your favorite social media?
Facebook. I use twitter too, but Facebook is easier for me to follow. I like the bigger posts, immediate pictures, and interacting with the groups.
What's the hardest scene you have ever written?
The first sex scene in a currently unpublished story was one I dreaded but felt the story needed. For that reason, I found it difficult to start. Funny enough, I found that it was actually fun to write after I nailed down the "vocabulary." :) Sexy scenes are an important part of modern day romance and add to the intimacy and love between my characters.
