Interview with Rodney Fereday

Published 2016-07-01.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes, it was a terrific adventure story which will be familiar to many and told the epic tale of 'Tom Sawyer'.
I remember vividly looking forward to the teacher reading it aloud to the class each afternoon before we left school to return home. The antisipation of waiting for each days episode had us hanging on to every word.
I'm never sure if that teacher knew how powerful the readings would be, in each child's future development.
How do you approach cover design?
This is very important, and never rushed, eventually the title and the picture image on the cover will come to mind and will in some way complement each other. You can never, as the saying goes,
'Judge a book by its Cover'. But the words and cover image is the first chance an author has to
attract their readership.
What two books influenced you the most?
Firstly ......'The Bible' as you might expect, which is a complete library within and which I never
tire of reading ......a kind of blueprint, on which I endeavour to lead my life.
Second ....'The Power of Now' written by Ekhart Tolle. This is a wonderful read and examines personal
Spirituality but through the prism of phycology. A book to inspire personal development.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My trusty iPad, because it's so handy. It is also my 'tool of choice' with which write my books
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
The world wide net is without doubt the greatest marketing tool. Then...the book cover, and the blurb on the back cover are both important. Because my books are about spirituality and in particular Christianity, I believe it's
Important to give some books away to congregations I meet and ask people to read and pass on to others
And some of my books have taken off as teaching material for house or cell groups within Churches. In fact, I'm now working on a book, which I hope will be 'honed' for the purpose of being....... a 'work book' .....for such groups.
Describe your desk
I don't have a desk as such. But work on iPad from a comfortable easy chair, with a cup of tea to hand.
I find my writing is not organised or disciplined to so many set hours each day. But I write spasmodically
As my thought come, and write at that moment until I'm spent.
When did you first start writing?
Not until I retired and reached the age of sixty eight !
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
By being the most effective marketing tool in my arsenal !
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting feed back from my readership, and realising people can be inspired to address their own spirituality.
What do your fans mean to you?
I'm not looking for fans and would fight against any sense of 'Ego'. What I'm interested in is that 'spark'
of spirituality within my readership, which I would seek to ignite. I suppose much as the original
gospel writers intended to achieve.
