Interview with Brian K. Larson

Published 2013-08-24.
A little about your background?
I was raised a poor bla- oh, that’s a different story. I was born in June of 1959 in Seattle, Washington and lived in the town of Mount Lake Terrace. I grew up with two siblings, a brother and a sister. In school, I didn't do very well and never excelled at much of anything, except my imagination and his love for reading. I was given the title "bookworm" in school because I always had my nose in a book.

I could ready fairly well, but didn't know that I had a learning disability that would prevent me from understanding English. It wasn't until later in life that I discovered that I suffered from Dyslexia, a learning disability that affects millions of people.

I have held many jobs in my young adult life including, cleaning a meat market, pumping gas, carpet cleaning, and apartment maintenance. When I finally discovered that I suffered from this disability, I decided to better myself and obtain my Bachelor's Degree in Computer Technology, and not only did I manage to graduate but went on to receive my Masters in Information Systems. I’m now a successful manager at a large manufacturing company.

Do you write full time or part time? How do you structure your day?
I write part time for the time being. My day job is very stressful and I have many long days. I mostly write in the evenings and on weekends mostly. But my desire is to be able to leave my day job to write full time. It will happen, just a matter of time.
Why do you write?
I have found that writing is a great stress relief. If I’m feeling down or had a bad day, I can sit down and write for an hour or two and find that my stress leaves. In fact, I feel more stress if I don’t find the time to write; this has become a wonderful passion where I can spark the minds and imaginations of others.
What are you working on right now / or most recent work?
Currently I’m writing the fourth installment in this series, Secret of the Crystal IV – Forgotten Legacy. Book 1, the main title, releases June 4th of this year. Book 2 Secret of the Crystal II – The Forge is being released September of this year. Book 3 under the same title – Destiny should be ready for release this coming winter.
What inspired you to create this book?
This story has been in my mind for 30 years, but never had the gumption to write. Now that I have, I can’t see doing anything else. I found ways to cope with my disability and I want to share those things with others that suffer from Dyslexia or any other disability. The main theme is “If I can do it, you can too”.
What draws you to this genre?
I have always loved science fiction; loved it. But I never thought I could have written a book being dyslexic an all. So I have had this story in my mind for many years and one day I decided to just do it. I sat down and just started writing and I have found a true passion and discovered that I am doing much better with sentence structures and spelling, thought I still find many errors when I go back. I accomplished my lifelong dream of becoming a published author. I never dreamed this could have been possible, but I did it- and I want to share my story with others that suffer from Dyslexia by raising awareness.
How do you think you've evolved creatively?
The more I write, I feel the better I get. I have my own style and focus on dialogue. Descriptions were lacking at first, but I think I have forested those as well.
What was the hardest thing about writing this book?
Finding the time to write has always been a struggle. But I find that writing SciFi is a challenge. Sure, you can create wild imaginative tools, but I try to base them on real concepts or real physics whenever possible.
The most rewarding?
When you sit down to read a book, it should take you on a journey. It should take you to a place where you can forget all of your troubles. Also, I have received many ‘thank you’ notes in sharing my story and giving hope to others. I truly love it when someone thanks me for telling my story.
What are you working on next?
Currently I'm working on book four of the "Secret of the Crystal" series titled, "Forgotten Legacy" and in this installment, I take the reader back thousands of years to a forgotten time to learn how the ancestors of the hero in the first three came to be.
Who are your favorite authors?
“The Chronicles of Amber” by Roger Zelazny was captivated me as a young adult. I loved the characters and story line. My runner up book series has to be “The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant” by Stephen R. Donaldson. As you read a series, it’s very rewarding seeing the main character grow through the story.
Tell us a little about the series overall?
Secret of the Crystal was already a series concept. Our hero is on a quest to discover the strange abilities these Ackturrian crystals give the possessor. He feels there is something about them is not right. Through the entire series our hero faces new challenges and searches for answers to defeat his foes.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When am I not writing... I try to spend time with my wife and family. I have six grand-kids and they are joy to have over; I love them to death. They all tell me how proud they are of me being a published author, that's big to them.
