Interview with R. W. Alexander

Published 2014-06-12.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes vividly. It was about a detective who was between murder cases. When it was rejected by some of the best publishers in the business I was sure that the leading writers if that genre of the time were in cahoots to keep me out of the publishing business.
What is your writing process?
I sit down at the computer and start to write anything my character would find interesting, whether by accident or design. The main idea is to begin writing, because by nature I'm a lazy man and starting anything new is a struggle. After I start the adrenalin starts to flow and my character does the rest of it.
How do you approach cover design?
Simple, I think of the location of the story and that is the main design of my cover.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mostly adventure stories, cops and robbers yarns and books about "The Great Depression" because that is when my novels are set.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Computer.
Describe your desk
It's a rat's nest of papers, note books, pictures magazines and baskets full of notes that I haven't read in months. Someday I will and there will be an idea among them.
What are you working on next?
Harlan banks has discovered a ghost, but considering where he is camping it would be strange if he didn't encounter one.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Everyone where and how they grew up. Thankfully almost all of my memories are good ones, except for the time I stuck my hand in a hedge to retrieve a softball. Unfortunately I grabbed a wasp nest. I haven't liked wasps since.
