Interview with Heather Sheldon

Published 2015-11-04.
What is your writing process?
I'm a pantser. I don't plan things out. I let my muse send me in the direction my stories need to go.
How do you approach cover design?
I approve my covers, but I am not a cover artist. I leave that to the professionals.
What do you read for pleasure?
I'm a romance reader. I've been reading a lot of historical recently. My reading roots are in paranormal and fantasy fiction. But any good story is worth reading.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I'm currently reading on a Kindle Fire. Thanks to my wonderful husband. He keeps me up to date with my electronics. I'm rather hopeless in that area.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I enjoy Facebook party events. It's fun to connect with readers.
Describe your desk
Way to cluttered. Every week I swear I'll tidy, but time slips on. (There are always too many interesting stories to read and write.)
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Canada and Michigan. I'm not sure what influences these places had, but I've always loved to read.
When did you first start writing?
I kept a diary from as far back as I can remember. My latest muse woke up in 2009 and demanded I write a story to be published. I've been working with her ever since.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I'm the mother of three young adult women and got the idea for this story from my daily life.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
This book was published by a small press. When they went out of business, eight months into my four year contract, I decided to republish this book on my own.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smash words seems to an up and coming distributor. I'm looking forward to my story reaching a wide, perhaps world-wide audience through them. They make the publishing process simple for even un-savvy tech folks like me.
