Interview with Styna Lane

Describe your desk
My desk is more like a bed... in that it is a bed.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing, as a hobby, in grade six. I wasn't keen on doing schoolwork, so my English teacher allowed me to turn in stories in place of the assignments.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I'd say the greatest joy of writing, for me, is the sense of freedom. You are capable of creating anything, and you're only limited by the boundaries of your imagination.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I remember writing, in grade six, was about a group of survivors who took shelter in a shopping mall after an unexpected comet wiped out the rest of humanity. It wasn't very clever or original, but I remember enjoying writing it.
What is your writing process?
I have very little process. I'm not fond of doing outlines. I just start writing, based on a vague idea of what I think will happen, then let the story pan out however it chooses. It often ends up completely different from how I expected.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I remember reading was the first in the Harry Potter series. It had a massive impact on me, in that it really opened my eyes to the magic of reading and writing. I was amazed by how easily words could transport me to a different world.
