Interview with Rachel A Olson

Published 2016-10-23.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do! I was in fourth grade, and was required to write and illustrate a story for a contest being done through the college in my town. I wrote about a green blob that was created by a scientist. The blob ate everything, and grew every time it ate, until it was a monstrosity. I bet my mom still has it at her house.
How do you approach cover design?
I am my own designer. My personal style is simple and basic. I prefer something clean and elegant over something entirely too busy.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Sterling by Dannika Dark is my #1. I came across this book by happenstance, and fell in love immediately. Dannika is currently my favorite author of all time.

What the Heart Wants by Kelli McCracken quickly became a favorite as well. I also found her books by accident, but I'm glad I did.

Elena Gray's Night Visions is a fantastic read. It's a little different than most shifter books I've read.

The Silver Kiss by Annette Curtis Klause has been a favorite ever since I was a teen. It was the first vampire book I remember reading and loving.

Paperquake by Kathryn Reiss is also something I read in high school and have never forgotten. It's a supernatural love story that really had my attention from the first page.
What do you read for pleasure?
I'm a hardcore paranormal/fantasy nerd. If it's weird, I like it.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle Fire 1st Gen, and the Kindle app on my smartphone.
Describe your desk
My bed. I don't have a desk I use for writing. I have a laptop and tons of pillows. I just curl up on my bed and type away!
When did you first start writing?
When I was 7, I rewrote and illustrated The Three Little Pigs. It was not my own story, but it was the first time I truly remember enjoying writing.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My roommate and I were conversing one full moon evening, and we were both so incredibly inspired that the trilogy just bloomed and came to life. It didn't take long to crack out the first novella.
