Jimmy and Sandra Ault's "King of the New World" brings reality to life in very early Florida in such a way that the characters seem real people rather than stereotypes one finds in history books. The hero, sixteen-year-old Ramon, is washed ashore off the American Coast. He makes his way inland meeting Native Americans some of which are friendly and some hostile. His story of survival is poignant, dangerous, and spell-binding. Named Strange Bear Man by Indians he integrates himself into Indian life, marrying his first love, an Indian slave girl he rescues. Months later, with child, she succumbs to small pox during a village epidemic. Her mother, Phantom Cat, a Spiritual Mother and Guide, takes him under her wing and teaches him the way of the Indians. With her guidance, he marries again two Indian sisters and builds a family. One of his wives is captured by a brutal ship captain and is taken to Cuba as a slave. He pursues the captors and frees his wife only to find her a victim of her abuses. The story is a melting pot of personalities, cultures, and life in the New World long before the Mayflower and the Jamestown colonies. For early American history buffs, this story is a must read.
