Biography

Elizabeth (Betty) Murrow was born in 1937 and raised on ranches in eastern Colorado. At the age of 18, she studied at the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Denver for 2 years and then entered the Sisters of Mercy convent in Omaha, Nebraska. While there, she obtained her baccalaureate degree and a license to practice as a registered nurse. She remained with the convent for 10 years, until she made the decision to leave, in 1966, and become a Navy nurse. In 1969, she served a year on the USS Sanctuary, off the coast of Vietnam; followed by a tour of duty as a Navy Nurse recruiter in Omaha. At the end of her enlistment, she married, gave birth to a daughter, and completed her Ph.D. in Nursing. She taught for many years at Clemson University, College of Nursing in South Carolina. During this time, she struggled as a single mother, to provide for her daughter, while attempting to advance her career in a still gender-biased society.

After retiring from Clemson University, Dr. Murrow moved to the Charleston, South Carolina area and obtained a Juris Doctor from Charleston School of Law.

Dr. Murrow now makes her home in Jefferson County, West Virginia.
