DEADLINE tells the story of Grayson McLeod, a journalist form Bentonville City. Despite being a great journalist he is laid off from the Benton Bulletin and finds his next opportunity in a little town in the eastern Ozarks, Indian Lakes Village. As the new managing editor of the White Horse Mountain Chronicle, Grayson is granted a year to rescue the newspaper. He has to fight against prejudice, corruption, and the idiosyncrasies that come with every little town. David Cox is a wonderful writer that captured me from chapter one by truly creating a world I could dive and swim in. I love this book because he brings Indian Lakes Village to life with his rich descriptions of the landscape, campfire stories, sporting events, and especially his well-rounded characters. I would even say that my favorite aspect is the people of this story. The main character is sarcastic but endearing, his comebacks to some of the insults he receives in this new world make the reader sympathize immediately with him. Additionally, being undervalued despite his great capacities had me rooting for him until the end. By seeing the town from an outsider’s point of view (Grayson) Cox is able to show us a broader and charmingly disturbing picture of Indian Lakes Village. Full of quaint personalities like Gus Runsinger, Where Izzy, and Emerald Busby, characters that embody the essence that make town life a wonderful but slightly terrifying place. All in all, DEADLINE reads like a thriller, but in this case we’re not chasing a killer, but a story… the biggest story of all, what secrets is this little town hiding behind its trite slogan: A place like no other.
