"1526" is a wonderful modern take on the classic "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" tale. With clever allusions to "Oz" and believable characters, Rena Edgar creates a story that many people can relate to. Don't think that this is just a modern copy of "Oz", though. "1526" takes a life of it's own with its characters' personalities, fears and reasons, all the while still alluding to the original trope. Gail Scott is rather plain but very honest and sweet teenage girl who must deal with bullying and exclusion at school. After a tornado hits, she finds herself among vast plains of cornstalks that seem to go on forever. There she meets Lynn, a mysterious woman who seems to want to help Gail, but does she have something more in mind? Gail also meets Cro Wicker, a kind, friendly and simple boy her age; Tim Mann, a snarky and cynical young boy who seems to be turning to metal; and Leo Hart, a disheveled and homeless looking man who is rather self depreciating. Together they travel to find a way back to their homes, but something sinister seems to be taking place... I definitely recommend this, especially if you are looking for a solid short story.
