The secrets of the past have a way of coming back. Peg Jessup, returns to rural Victoria after a stint in a girl's training centre. Loathe to be sent back, and unwilling to be pushed around anymore, Peg decides to straighten out her drunken whore of an aunt. In the process, she discovers her aunt's relationship to dangerous men, and that she had been keeping secrets from them. As the secrets emerge, including oddities about her own origins, she becomes a target and is forced to flee interstate with her friend Jack Dawes. Just as things begin to look up, and the chance of having a career as a singer/musician is within her grasp, the dangerous men find her. When she is framed for a series of thefts, Peg, now using her real name of Megan, decides to fight back.
