Interview with Paul Wiseman

Published 2023-07-03.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Walsall, England. I began playing Chess and Soccer during my pre-teens and my interest has remained strong since those early days.
When did you first start writing?
I seriously began after I retired as this occasioned much more time to think and plan what I was to write. Before this, I wrote mostly short pieces about my interests in a variety of genres, with a view, ultimately, of publishing them in an anthology. However, they did not, I felt, constitute worthy of publication due to the eclectic subject matter.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have an unpublished thriller which is ready to publish but await a user-friendly publisher that does not involve me completing non-UK tax forms which I find very confusing. Currently I have a book on Chess and one on Soccer available on line. The chess book illustrates common techniques you should know as soon as you are au fait with basics of the game. The theme of my book on Soccer represents a unique strategy for improving your team's results.
Who are your favorite authors?
Raymond Chandler, P.G. Wodehouse, Alastair Cooke, H. L. Mencken
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Not a lot, unless I have a planned reason to do so, or I have a sudden inspirational moment.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Playing chess and watching my local Women's Soccer team. Much more fun than watching the macho attitudes in the men's game.
What is your writing process?
Difficult, as I sometimes cannot see how to continue and have to wait for inspiration. At other times everything just flows so easily.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
"Treasure Island" drew me into its pages and I could not wait to see how everything turned out.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mostly books on chess.
How do you advertise your books?
I would like anyone who reads my books to review them as this gives me pleasure as I cannot afford to pay for advertising.
