Interview with Colorful Pen Press Inc

Published 2020-05-06.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Guyana before moving to the United States. I met my husband and now live in Canada.
They were slim pickings when it came to romance novels or romance with diverse characters. That’s just the way it was back then. So I read what I had and enjoyed most of it.
I think because I had little choice other than to appreciate what I had, I write what I enjoy. My characters come in whatever form I dream up.
Who do you see as the intended audience of this series?
Readers who enjoy regency romance with flawed yet determined heroes and heroines.
That said, I do write for personal enjoyment.
What surprised you the most about writing this series?
I’m far less patient than I thought.
Writing The Captain’s Lady was and still is fun. I think that pure enjoyment sustained me during the nail biting process of waiting for edits.
As an indie author, loads of patience is essential during each stage of publishing. I was reminded how supportive and important a strong community is.
Who’s your favourite character in The Captain’s Lady?
First, it’s a new series so my thoughts might sway as the characters grow. I tend to have a love hate relationship with my characters.
I love Nicholas’s strong will. Isabella proves time and time again that she’ll be seen for who she is and not for title. Then there is Cassie, she can be such trouble and I can’t wait to see what she does next.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I can’t say enough about the resources available to publish a successful book. The best practices are invaluable.
What’s something about you that readers don’t know?
I have Cystic Fibrosis (CF).
Living with CF shapes a great deal of my decisions. I’ve learned to be flexible, determined, and though the process is longer than most, persistent with my writing.
There are so many great stories waiting to be told by amazing creatives and I wish they are written as though tomorrow is not guaranteed.
One of things I tell myself is to fear not, write anyway. My genre, my length, my story.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans fuel my writing. There is great excitement when they love the characters as much as I do.
What are you working on next?
I’m currently working on Loved by a Lady, book two in the Ladies in Scandal series.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
With family and outdoors.
