Interview with Debbie Burns

Published 2015-10-21.
What inspired you to write?
We started to write TUKIE TALES in February 1993. You probably remember the tragic bullying and death of little Jamie Bulger that happened in England on February 12, 1993. Some people call him James. My sister and I were so saddened about what happened to that sweet, innocent child and how people treat each other. We talked about it and decided that we had to try to do something to help. We really didn’t know what to do or how we could do it; we just knew we had to do something. We decided that we needed to start with very young children. We believe everyone needs a strong foundation to build their life upon and we think that knowing about and having positive life skills was so important. We knew we had to start with very young children and so our stories are for them. We believe they will make a positive difference in future generations and a push in the right direction.
How do you approach cover design?
We wanted the covers to be cute and make people smile when they saw them.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm retired now and I like to paint abstract art. The beauty of flowing colors relaxes me.
