Interview with Jw Ellis

Published 2015-10-20.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I find that the world is mostly online. So getting out there on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Google, LinkedIn, Goodreads, Youtube has been the best way of connecting with fans and readers.
Describe your desk
Messy lmao. Covered in pens, markers, highlighters, research books, maps. But that's all normal for an author. As well, I have a Porcelain Raven, I call Edgar, and a werewolf Figure, named Lucien. I keep a dream catcher in the window as well. There are little plaques with inspirational quotes and pictures of my family and friends.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in East Texas, but I mainly lived in my head. I would disappear into books, movies or music. From the earliest age, I was pretending to be anywhere but here. The older I got, the more I saw the beauty in Texas. Rolling hills, thick forests, endless backroads, and my imagination began spiraling and dancing around until my gothic mind began to turn Texas twistier.
When did you first start writing?
Stories, oh god, as early as 3rd or 4th grade. Poetry around middle school, you know first heartbreak and all that. In highschool, I wrote a horrible story, and friends bought it for 50 cents, I have a copy stashed away somewhere for reflection.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I love supernatural worlds and creatures, but I also like the ones that touch our reality. My current works are both. I wanted a story about a heroine that was not all good, I hate the fake purity a lot of female characters try to keep. I wanted her dirty and bloody, scared and fearful, and yet thirsty. I wanted allies you were not sure you trusted and suitors who may end up being the biggest enemies.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I gave up trying to form my writing to "The Public" or more so "Publishing Houses." I like dark and gritty, horrific tales, and no one was going to tell me they wouldn't sell. I knew they would.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been a huge help to understanding Indie publishing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating characters and their worlds. Developing their personalities and then watching them grow without even realizing I have no control over them.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean everything. I love to hear from them. Their questions, their shock and shame at liking the gritty dirty things I write.
What are you working on next?
A prequel series that sets up another piece of my universe
Who are your favorite authors?
Edgar Allen Poe, Bram Stoker, Jane Austen, Emily Bronte
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My daughter.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Listening to music, spending time with family and friends, watching movies, Pinterest lmao
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Goodreads
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
When Tears Fall on Rose Petals, it was horrible... like epically cheesy and terrible
What is your writing process?
Id love someone to watch and explain it to me, cause I have no idea
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
First books I really remember reading where the Babysitters Club books in 4th grade, but the first story that gripped me was A Tell-Tale Heart. I loved it. It had me on the edge of my seat gripped with its intensity.
How do you approach cover design?
Artistic expression of my cover artist, I give her a broad idea and let her go where her pens take her
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Books.... I love all books. All genres.
What do you read for pleasure?
A good cheesy period piece romance, an edge of my seat horror, or a gripping supernatural adventure
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle or Nook
