Interview with Ntobeko Nkosi

Published 2022-08-25.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up at Eshowe in rural areas and later moved to Madadeni in Newcastle which is the township. Both these places made a very big positive impact in my life in terms of writing. In both places, my teachers were encouraging us to be creative at our best when writing compositions and impromptu speeches. That built the skill to think fast and come up with ideas, enabled me to have skill in conveying my feelings, emotions, opinions, and any form of communication.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing while I was in high school but it was those articles and poems about current situations which occurred around me. I used to write specifically about issues related to education, social welfare, and human relations.
What motivated you to become an author?
I was motivated by reading other authors' works. Their creativity and choice of words created a picture about the book, writing elements, and the lesson from the book.
What is your writing process?
In my writing process, I do pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing and publishing.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote? What was it about?
It was just a few pages being neglected by teachers where we were deprived of our right to learn. It was during Mathematics periods for 3 days where the educator didn’t show up and no one explained what was happening, unfortunately, we received the bad news that he was admitted due to mental illness. I cough out what was in my chest about the situation displaying my feelings and emotions.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy when writing is when I communicate my ideas with the readers and enable them to change their perspectives on viewing things, especially things affecting them or others.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Inkinsela yaseMgungundlovu.
The book that I first read was Inkinsela yaseMgungundlovu by Sibusiso Nyembezi. What I learned from the book is that expensive clothing can mislead and give false status to other people; you can get recognition because of your false status. I learned that you need to check the background of people with a high profile who come into your life don’t do assumptions.
What are your five favourite books, and why?
My five favourite books are Kawumbiwa Ndawonye by P.B Vilakakazi, Bengithi Lizokuna by Nakanjani Sibiya. Hlomu The wife by Dudu Busani Dube, Raymond our husband by Busisiwe Precious Khumalo, Umnyama Ongenafu by Mandla Ndlovu I love all of these books I got different experiences about how I should view life.
What do your readers mean to you?
My readers are my heartbeat because I cannot write if they are not there, my writing exercise will be meaningless.
What is your book about?
My book is about GBV awareness, where people are being affected by not noticing that it is GBV.
What do you think readers will love about your book?
People will love seeing the intellectual which was displayed by the victim of GBV, and learn how you get out when being caught in an abusive relationship.
