Interview with Philippa Hawley

Published 2019-03-02.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the English countryside, in a house with a garden I could play in, surrounded by trees - so fortunate to have had a happy childhood. I guess all three of my novels have been based more in the countryside than in cities.
What do you read for pleasure?
Contemporary women's fiction.
Getting more into crime fiction these days too.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara- brilliant and moving, it stayed in mind for weeks.
Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult - I learned so much from this book about prejudice
Refuge by Dina Nayeri - beautiful descriptions
Americana by Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche - a brilliant African American love story
We are the Mulvaneys by Joyce carol Oates - a gripping family story
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle
When did you first start writing?
I started to write seriously when i took early retirement from work as a GP/Family Doctor. I find I am using my brain in a different way now, but often can't resist including health and medical issues in my writing
Describe your desk
I love my wide and messy with its three tiers of shelving. I feel at home here in my office seated at this desk. The computer and a printer sit on the bottom shelf, surrounded by notes on scraps of paper and pens. Writing magazines, boxes of notes and photos of the family occupy the middle, and books, notebooks and files are on the top shelf. A calendar hangs from a rail on one side.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book, Lawn House Blues, is the story of three families, from three different backgrounds involved with life in a large English mansion The house is almost a character in its own right and when its past secrets are revealed in a huge storm one night, all three families come together to work through what has happened. It's a tale of sadness, intrigue and and finally, acceptance
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I simply wanted people to read my book and I wanted to maintain some control over choices to be made along the way to publication and then marketing.
What do your fans mean to you?
To know someone has read and enjoyed my book is the very reason I write.
What are you working on next?
I'm enjoying writing short stories at the moment, but I'm also quietly planning a memoire about the life of one of my grandmothers.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's early days as yet but I am hopeful Smashwords will help Lawn House Blues reach an audience outside of the UK. This very English book will I'm sure appeal to readers far and wide, who might be interested in the British way of life portrayed in it.
