Interview with Damion Boyd

Published 2016-02-10.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I grew up with mountains of short stories and poems because I didn't like reading long, drawn out works. "After the Storm" by Ernest Hemingway was one of my early favorites.
How do you approach cover design?
My wife took some beautiful nature shots in Mexico and my daughter is an aspiring graphic artist. The cover for "The Weight of the World" is of a cloud formation that traced the form of a cacti at a Tequila ranch.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Bible, the Complete Works of Ernest Hemingway, Something Beautiful for God , The Imitation of Christ and liberal Fascism.
The Bible because there is a God and it reveals God to us.
Hemingway because he wrote in well-cut diamonds instead of massive proportions.
The book on Mother Teresa because she shows how to be a saint.
The imitation because it drips holiness.
Jonah Goldberg's "Liberal Fascism" because it open my eyes to many cultural realities.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read books like "The Book Thief" and free Smashwords authors for "raw reading" pleasure.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love to use Kindle.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
So far I have used free give-aways on Amazon and Smashwords and have issued near 200 books in 40 days.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing when I was about 5 or 6. I made a little cardboard book with crayons and shoelaces and brought it to my mom.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"The Weight of the World" is a collection of most of my life's poems. I left out some that were owned by publishing houses and included a summary article of my book PRIMAL ETHICS. It is an essay about modern ethics. It gives sharp clarity about our culture today.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I delight in the Truth and sharing truth makes me happy.
What are you working on next?
I am always looking for ways to make an easier read of complex reality. I am working on a "McNuggets book" to help people quickly understand the culture they deal with on a daily basis.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I enjoy helping my sons and daughter with sports and other activities. I have a great fondness for baseball and teaching youth.
What is your writing process?
I pray and think long and hard and write many "fat pages" of trash before slimming down to a sleek and organized product.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in San Diego during the 1960's. The 60's made me hungry for explanations.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is a great forum for us to get our ideas to the public. It is easy to navigate and understand.
What do your fans mean to you?
I don't write for a following, though I have seen people completely embrace my views. I write to share the truth. It gives me joy to see someone "get it".
Who are your favorite authors?
St Paul and Benjamin Wiker and ErnestHemmingway.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Work at a shipyard.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I love to browse free books.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I wrote a short story about a little boy who played at "war".
Describe your desk
A dining room table and computer and a beautiful, fawn pug curled at my feet.

Here’s the central problem. Your children are growing up in a very difficult culture that even you don’t understand. There is growing corruption and confusion and a world of pain coming round the corner. You sense it. We sense it. But, how can we protect them? One way is to help them see what they are getting into. And, to do that YOU have to know what is going on. This book will do that.
