Interview with Indra Zuno

Published 2020-01-31.
What do your fans mean to you?
I don't think I have fans yet! But without readers my work would be almost for naught. Almost, because even if I knew hardly anyone would ever read my book, I still would have written it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing in the hopes that my story will keep readers on the edge of their seats and that they will learn something new and interesting.
What are you working on next?
A historical novel about Baron Von Steuben.
Who are your favorite authors?
Alexander James Thom, Lucia St. Clair Robson, Kevin Wilson, Robert Harris, Neil Gaiman.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The knowledge that my existence is so very, very improbable, and that I'm a tiny creature in an unfathomably vast universe. I realize I won the best lottery of all by having been born, and on top of that, having been born in propitious circumstances.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working, reading, doing regular chores, spending time with my boyfriend going to museums, the ballet, concerts, traveling, cooking.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I peruse the Reviews of the Historical Novel Society magazine.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
No. I was a kid.
What is your writing process?
For Freedom Dues I discovered the subject when I read White Cargo (Don Jordan and Michael J Walsh). I then read many, many more books on indentured servitude and a host of other matters pertinent to my story. With that information I was able to pick whether my characters would be male of female, children, teenagers or adults, what country they came from, and where in Colonial America the story would take place. I then began writing without an outline, something I won't do again.
The idea for my second book (which I haven't started writing yet) came from doing research for Freedom Dues.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing seriously, that is, with the goal of finishing Freedom Dues, in 2011.
