Interview with Jan McInnis

Published 2020-04-08.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on telling stories of my comedy travels. . .there are a lot of weird experiences out there! And of course my comedy writing blog is what i write on weekly!
Why did you write this book on humor writing?
I wrote this book because I was being asked all the time "how do you come up with this comedy material so quickly?" I kinda got tired of answering that question, so I put the answer in an easy-to-read book, and I sell it cheaply! I also want people to start using humor more. . there's no mystery about it. I don't expect people to be a comedian. . .that's not what this book is for (though you can certainly use the tips to help your act). I want people to stop being boring!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I love what I do. . .writing, keynotes, comedy shows. . .it's a lot of fun. And I've got a mortgage.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love riding my motorcycles and bicycles. . . anything with 2 wheels. I'm not great at it, but who cares. I also have a cat and a dog that I enjoy. . .and I love hiking. Neither the cat or the dog like hiking though.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I look at the recommendations. I read a lot of true crime and bios of people who do dangerous stuff that I'll never do, like climb Mt. Everest.
What is your writing process?
I try to spend time each day. . . i do carry a pen and paper with me and jot down ideas as they pop into my head.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I mostly just sell my books at my speaking events, but I really think there's a larger market of people who write and don't know how to add a little humor. That's who should be reading my book.
Describe your desk
Messy.
When did you first start writing?
I've been a comedian and comedy writer for over 25 years. I was fortunate enough to be able to write jokes right out of the gate. My stage presence in comedy took a little longer! Ha ha. I have 2 books out - one on how ANYONE can write humor titled "Finding the Funny Fast," and my second book "Convention Comedian."
What's the story behind your latest book?
This book is based on stories of my comedy career . . .what happened to me and what I learned. Most comics have wild party stories, but I don't have a lot of those. I have stories of things that happened - like having to perform on a spinning dance floor. Then I wrap up with the lesson learned. It's a short, fun read that will give readers a taste of the comedy life.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I just wanted to tell my story, and didn't want to spend a lot of time finding a publisher. I'm not a famous comedian, so going the traditional route of publishing may have been more challenging.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I enjoy getting my book out into the universe, and Smashwords is an easy way to do that.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Just getting to tell my story . . .
What do your fans mean to you?
Not sure I have any. . LOL. But I do get notes here and there from people and it's really flattering.
Who are your favorite authors?
I like books about people who have done things I'd never do, like climb Mt. Everest. So I don't really have a favorite author.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I did a fake newspaper back in junior high school for my journalism class. My newspaper was funny, but I made fun of the teacher, so I got in trouble. Lesson learned.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Probably the chronicles of Narnia was a big influence on me . . .even though now I really don't like fantasy books.
How do you approach cover design?
I got a good designer.
