Interview with Marquita Valentine

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the northeastern part of North Carolina, near the coast. Well, all of my books take place in North Carolina-yes, I love my state that much <G>- and eventually, I'd love to have a series that takes place where I grew up.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book, Just Desserts (Holland Springs #4), was purely reader driven. They wanted and asked for Sebastian Romanov's story. Due to the flexibility that Indie publishing allows, I was able to give it to them. I loved writing Just Desserts, and giving the hero a heroine that was his complete opposite in every way.

Sebastian's so very proper (he's an earl, after all) while Daisy Barnes is so open and sweet (she's the town's favorite baker). She's the comedienne and he's the straight guy. She calls him out on his world domination plans and he loves it, because no one else would dare. Yet, Daisy wouldn't ask him to change his very proper ways or world domination plans, and Sebastian wouldn't ask her to change her very sweet and open ways.

I think what made me giggle the most about this story was that *he* was the one to fall in love at first sight, not her. This uptight, matter-of-fact man-- who's also the CEO of a multi-billion dollar company-- falls head over heels for a shop girl and almost immediately sets to wooing her. Easey-peasey, right?

Not so fast...He can't do it as himself, because she's back with her ex, so he becomes virtual friends with her, and....well, I can't give away the entire story.

You'll just have to read Just Desserts to find out what happens next.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Gosh...I have so many answers for this one, but *none* of them include the words:" I have mad hate for traditional publishing." I don't, not even a little.

For me, I had been querying for almost two years, and was very tired of all the this is really good, we love your voice, you're funny-you know: ALL THE GOOD FEELS--but we have no idea how to market this book. After talking with some very sucessful indie authors, Sarra Cannon and Ava Stone, I decided to take the plunge. (By the way, Romance Writers are some of the most generous people I know. Everyone is willing to help everyone else out, no matter where you are in your career.)

And oh my, what a plunge. I love the control of it all. I love designing my covers and being able to decide what's best for my career, without the pressure of a publisher. I am the publisher, lol.

Don't get me wrong though; It's a LOT of work. I'm always working on my business, always tweaking or writing for the next deadline. I've been at this for a year now, and it hasn't gotten easier, but the rewards have grown, and for that I'm thankful and grateful.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords gave me access to readers that I wouldn't have had on my own. Especially with Apple. Can I say that I have All The Good Feels for the people of Smashwords and Apple? Seriously though, I'm thankful and grateful for Mark Coker and Co. promoting my books and asking me to take part in promotions that have helped my career tremendously.
What do your fans mean to you?
Without my fans, I'd be nowhere. I adore my fans. The daily emails, tweets and Facebook messages I get make my day! Gosh, there are some days when I'm just so blah, and then someone will tell me how much they loved Drive Me Crazy or how the heroine of Twice Tempted made them laugh out loud so hard that people were staring and they didn't care.

That means the world to me! I write my books for them. Like I said before, Just Desserts was written specifically for my fans!
What are you working on next?
Right now, I'm working on my next new adult romance, ONLY FOR YOU (Boys of the South #2), which will be released September 16th. It's the conclusion of Violet and Cole, the hero and heroine of LIVE FOR YOU (BOSS #1), but it's not the conclusion of the series!

Here's the blurb:

Loose ends left loose for too long tend to strangle.

Cole and Violet knew it wouldn’t be easy. They knew their relationship would take work. But when the press finds out about Violet Lynn’s newest boyfriend, they start digging. And when his past come to light, exposing all of his family’s secrets, their relationship begins to fray.

Country Music’s Golden Boy, Jaxon Hunter, has it all, except the girl that got away. What she saw, she really didn’t. What she thought happened, he allowed her to believe for reasons so insane that no one would ever have believed him if he had confessed. But now that everything’s out in the open, he’s going to do his damndest to convince her that he’s the only one for her.

Now Violet must choose between Jaxon— her first love and the guy she thought had cheated on her—and Cole—the guy who helped her heal and love again.

Or will one of them make the decision for her?

It's already up for pre-order on iTunes, and will be soon for Barnes&Noble and Kobo!
Who are your favorite authors?
Carly Phillips, Bella Andre, Lisa Klepas, Rachel Gibson, Sherry Thomas, Sarra Cannon, Andris Bear,Tammara Webber...and so many more. I could go on and on.

I actually tweet and post on Facebook about my favorite books and authors. To me, they're not my competition...they're writers I'd admire and want to be like, so I don't mind spreading the love.
