Adiela Akoo

Biography

Adiela Akoo is a South African poet and author with a background in banking and comprehensive healing.

She has been published in a variety of anthologies and journals, was nominated as one of the Top 7 Most Promising Literary Influencers in the GBC Awards 2020, is a recipient of the prestigious DUX Award, has represented the Durban UNESCO City of Literature in various collaborations with other cities of literature, and is also the founder and editor of The Quilled Ink Review international literary journal. As an ambassador of literacy, she volunteered her time as the Vice Chair of the Literacy Association of South Africa, KZN.

Lost in a Quatrain, her soul-stirring debut collection of relatable, inspiring, and thought-provoking poetry on a journey to becoming, a journey of hope and healing, was First Runner Up for poetry in the SAIP Awards 2021.

In her spare time, Adiela loves creating arts and crafts using mixed media, watching movies, playing Scrabble or chess, creating in the kitchen, spending time with loved ones, chatting to the birds out in the garden, and the stray cats that have adopted her, among other things.

Adiela hopes to leave the world a better place through her writing.

Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing?
My love for reading and writing stems from my mother, who encouraged me at an early age. Besides weekly trips to the local book exchange, my mum cut pictures from old magazines and stuck them in an exercise book, as prompts, and had me write about them daily. My parents divorced when I was still very young and this was my mother's way, as a single mum, of keeping me occupied while she was away at work.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I continued to write whenever I could over the years, but never considered it anything more than a hobby and a means of catharsis, until I met one of my former English teachers at a reunion, who posed the question: 'Why aren't you writing? YOU should be writing!". When I responded that I had in fact been writing, my teacher asked again: 'Then why aren't you publishing?!"

That was the initial catalyst, but I didn't pay too much heed until life, yet again, threw several bricks at me in quick succession, threatening and shaking every foundation I held dear, until I was practically cornered into publishing Lost in a Quatrain - a select collection of deep, soul stirring poetry, written over a period of 18 years, with each poem telling a story that pieces together the puzzle of this crazy, not always romantic, experience we call life...
