Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
One of the earliest books I ever read was Dragon's Blood by Jane Yolen when I was in elementary school. I simply loved how it was a sci-fi fantasy. A remote metal-poor world with dragons that breathe fire, a boy searching for freedom, and a debt that must be paid. I still remember the character names and places almost 30 years after reading it. It was so immersive that I felt like I was right there alongside Jakkin an Akki in their adventures.
How do you approach cover design?
I am very well versed in graphic design. And with that said, I pay a professional to do my covers. Although, I did create my own title font. I still had the cover artist stylize the font, but I did have a lot of fun creating it. I could go on an on about sci-fi font theory but the only one who would be entertained would be me. I prefer covers where the protagonist(s) are shown along with another iconic element of the story.
