Josh Shiben

Biography

Josh Shiben lives in the swamps of Fredericksburg, Virginia with his wife and two mongrels. An aerospace engineer by day and couch potato by night, Josh has from a young age been in love with storytelling. Whether they be told through published works, e-books, or simply around a burning campfire, he's always particularly loved the captivating, yet intimate power of a scary story. Born in the late eighties, Josh spent his formative years reading Goosebumps, watching Are You Afraid of the Dark, and hiding under the blankets reading the esteemed Alan Schwartz's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Today, his favorite authors include Dan Simmons, Stephen King, Richard Matheson and H.P. Lovecraft.

His first novella, Dreams of Eschaton, is available now. He also blogs (ir)regularly at https://WrithingWord.blogspot.com/

Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Shenandoah valley, which runs along the Eastern edge of the Appalachian mountains from Maryland all the way down to Southwestern, VA. I essentially spent my whole life there, periodically moving further South along I-81. I almost always set my stories in this area (assuming it makes sense), I guess since I feel like I know it well enough to describe it to a stranger.
When did you first start writing?
I've always been a story-teller, even as a little kid. I'd be the one telling the scary story late at night, or fabricating some elaborate tall-tale. I've really only recently begun writing in the last couple of years.
