Jane MacGregor
Jane MacGregor wore out a whole box of pencils writing about Gideon & the Rivers. (Yes, she actually wrote the whole book with a pencil, on paper. And on napkins. And on any other bits of paper ready to hand.) She hopes, somewhere in the pages of her book, that you find a bit of fun. Stories, she says, are best when they take us on a journey, introduce us to some new friends, and bring us back to the real world with a chuckle for a souvenir.
Gideon Fletcher, her lead character, would like to tell you that she does a 'right decent job' of telling his story. Although, as he remembers it, he wasn't quite so inclined to end up on the losing end of an argument.
Aspen Rivers, Gideon's court-appointed external conscience, would like to say something too-- however, he is exhausted from chasing Gideon all over this great green earth. He would like to request, should there be a second book, that he be given a much better pair of handcuffs.
Meet Gideon and Aspen
Between the Rivers is a tough place to be. At least, it is for Gideon. He's a good-hearted soul with a penchant for trouble. They're a rowdy bunch of do-gooders with official orders to do some good in his life. It's a tug-of-war all the way.

"You got you any brothers? I got a bunch. Only they ain't rightly mine-- they comed with the rustling charges. Them weren't mine neither, the charges I mean, but I got 'em sure as I got them brothers. I reckon life's got one mighty peculiar sense-a humor." Gideon
GIDEON FLETCHER: good soul with a penchant for calamity. He's pretty sure justice needs a hand-- not just any hand-- but his.
ASPEN RIVERS: eldest brother, square-rigged, 6'4" in his socks, official guard, big brother & all around mother-hen
RIVERS FAMILY: a rowdy clan that believes in family, honor, courtesy & fighting your sibling to the ground for the last doughnut
LUKE GANDY: sheriff of Caswell Crossing, arrested Gideon for cattle theft, loves asking questions, hates doing paperwork
CASWELL CROSSING: small town west of Sticksville & beyond lost
MR. REED: A.K.A. "Pickle Face", a sour man with a bitter disposition who believes anything gone amiss must, eventually, be Gideon's fault.
The Article
by Jane MacGregor
This short story is a light-hearted introduction to 'The Rivers' series. The Rivers are a loyal family with two brothers (who share one name), a big brother (roughly the size of a boulder-- a big one), an older brother (who plans out his plans in advance), an uncle (named after an insect), and a father (who does his best to maintain some semblance of order). And then there is Gideon. . .
