  Vaughn, booked into an hotel with her fiance to celebrate her wedding, is bitten by a lurking werewolf, and killed. The next thing she is aware of is waking up in a morgue, to be told briskly by an unsympathetic fellow werewolf who doubles as janitor in this hospital morgue that she is a 'Changer' from now on, and will just have to get on with it - and he suggests she accompany him to a strange sort of halfway house for new shape shifters. Trips to explore the local nightlife are laid on, but advice on how to cope long term is strangely lacking... Vaughn, of course, suffers from PTSD and longs to get back to her old life - there is only a hint of comfort in her relationship with Ren, a fellow new werewolf, who works in the local library and tries to explore their condition on the internet. I'm very impressed. I am no expert on werewolf stories, but this came across as original. A lot of the werewolf stuff out there just seems to be romance, erotic and otherwise. In this book, the combination of supernatural goings on and a realistic background and believable characters was impressive. There is romance, but it develops naturally, if you can use that word in a fantasy story. The writing was strong: I think a lot of women writers don't want to write strong stuff because it comes across as 'masculine' and 'unromantic', but the writing here is vivid and evocative and pulls no punches. The relations between people (and werewolves) are depicted without sentimentality, yet feelingly. I loved the humour here. A light, ironical touch and an unfailing sense of the ridiculous permeate the whole. I don't often laugh out loud when reading, but I did here. The heroine may be flawed - I assume her having great difficulty in committing herself is intended to be a flaw - but that is a sympathetic one. No doubt she blames herself when her emotional coldness indirectly leads to tragedy for someone else - but she is in a state of emotional upheaval. I really love the way the woman lead character initiates the guerrilla action against the 'lupophagus' ( cannibalistic werewolves who prey on new 'Changers' not sure I spelt that correctly!). All the details of this are really well done - the author must have done some good research there - and it was quite nerve racking, especially the ambiguous role of the human apparent mercenary Matt, and the twist in the tale (unintentional pun!) that comes here. It comes across as a story which will probably continue as a series - and there are interesting nuances in the relations between the characters, particularly in the unresolved conflicts between them which should make interesting reading. I look forward to the sequel. All in all, an excellent read, funny, horrifying, and sometimes erotic.

  A sweet love story from this popular author. This Christmas special for Coldwater Springs has a very nice love story and walk on parts for all of the curvies who have featured in former stories in this series. When Kate Richmond, who has recently set up a bakery in Coldwater Springs, is asked by her friend, the now pregnant Sarah Winters to act as Mrs Claus in a Christmas spectacle, she winces. She's always been self conscious about those curves of hers. But when she hears that the lean and handsome Flynn Winters, Sarah's brother-in-law, is to play opposite her, well, the idea grows on her. She's been dreaming about him for some time. She's shy when she finds out that the script includes a kiss; but Flynn seems to be convinced that practice makes perfect and she isn't objecting, though his caresses drive her wild; she even finds him appealing padded out as Santa Claus; she can't help wondering - has Sarah set her up? . This is a sweet seasonal love story, told with Jenn Roseton's usual warmth,humour and concise style. '
