Nancy Smith
Biography
Nancy Smith is a 6th generation Texan and 4th generation Dallasite. Her uncle, Tillman L. Lawhon, was Dallas City Secretary and Alderman, 1892-1903, and Mayor Pro Tem of Dallas in 1904.
She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in North Dallas, Class of 1964, and from Southern Methodist University in 1968, and then attended the SMU Graduate School in history, studying primarily under Dr. Luis Martin. She also studied at l’Ēcole Nouvelle de la Suisse Romande in Lausanne, Switzerland, and at Christie’s Decorative Arts Course in London in 2004. After college, she was a special education teacher for two years. She joined the Dallas Morning News in 1974 where she was a finalist in investigative reporting in the Dallas Press Club’s Katie Awards and a finalist in consumer reporting in the Penney-Missouri Awards. She was named Society Editor of the Dallas Morning News from 1977-1982 and Celebrity and Society Columnist of the Dallas Times Herald from 1982 until the News bought the Herald in 1991 and closed the newspaper.
After the Herald closed, she published Dallas-Fort Worth High Society newspaper and magazine, was a business editor in Plano, Allen, McKinney and Frisco, and published Decorative Arts Magazine.
She is an Accredited Member of the International Society of Appraisers and founded the Decorative Arts Society of Dallas-Fort Worth. She is also a Realtor and professional speaker.
She published three books on 19th century French, British and Spanish history: Imperial Wedding of Old Paris, Imperial Triangle of Napoleon III, Empress Eugénie and the Intriguing Duke of Sesto, and Moments of Extraordinary Violence and Intensity about the Franco Prussian War and Siege of Paris.
She also wrote two books about the history of Dallas during the 1980’s, Dallas International with J.R. Ewing: History of Real Dallasites in the Spotlight of ‘Dallas’, Southfork and the 1980’s Gold Rush, and Dallas Celebrity in the Glamorous 1980s Era of Ronald and Nancy Reagan.
Nancy Smith has given talks about the 1980’s in Dallas at the Dallas Museum of Art League, International Society, Park City Club, Dallas Woman’s Club, various book and civic and social clubs, Rotary clubs including the Dallas Downtown Rotary Club, and was the primary spotlighted speaker for the 8th annual Dallas Public Library International Book Symposium.
She has also chaired several charity galas including the Greer Garson Galas for Parkinson’s disease research, the Northwood Institute Ball, and the Rotary District 5810 Rotary Gala that starred Marvin Hamlisch in 2007 and raised funds for water wells in Africa and Asia. In recent years she has also been president of the Argyle and Trippers dance clubs and in 2013, of Les Femmes du Monde, the fund-raising arm of the World Affairs Council of Dallas-Fort Worth and Children’s Medical Center. She founded the Decorative Arts Society of Dallas-Fort Worth through which she presented monthly programs on the decorative arts using Dallas Design District authorities and speakers of Christie’s, Sotheby’s and the Heritage Auction Gallery.
She specializes in upsizing and downsizing for a wide variety of clients as an Accredited Member of the International Society of Appraisers, headquartered in Chicago, and as an Accredited Luxury Home Specialist and Seniors Real Estate Specialist with eXp Realty.
