Maureen Riggs

Biography

Graduated from college with a B.A. in American Literature and a Master's Degree in both Secondary English Education and Creative Writing. After getting married on a mountain top in Vermont, my (then) husband and I drove our sheltered bodies and small-town minds across the continent and landed in Portland, Oregon. BOOM! Everywhere I turned, I found a tribe member! I learned quickly about all the great things Portland has to offer a wanna-be writer--poetry slams, Book Festival, Portland Literary Arts classes, Meetups for every genre and writing style.....I soaked it all in and when I couldn't find a continuing ed. class for memoir writing that I could afford, I started my own! I am now an adjunct faculty member at beautiful Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon, where I teach "Writing an Autobiographical Novel."

In addition to making my Refugee piece into a full-length book, I am attempting to complete a memoir. Now you're onto me and have my photo...if you ever see me procrastinating in a coffee shop in front of my laptop, you have my permission to slap the back of my curly-haired head and yell "Finish your book!"

Refugee: My 1,531 Hours Hosting a Disabled Arabic-Speaking Syrian Refugee
Price: Free! Words: 14,270. Language: English. Published: December 16, 2019 . Categories: Essay » Sociology
My book is a series of vignettes of my 1,531 hours hosting a disabled, Arabic-speaking Syrian refugee in my home. I taught our stranger English, mimed words for him until he knew. I showed him how to buy food, how to use a food processor and ride the bus. What he taught me was so much more--to absorb the silence of my bomb-free neighborhood and understand the weight of my freedom and privilege.
