  • Pride, Prejudice and Theories of Love and Marriage: A Retelling of Jane Austin's Classic on June 10, 2021

A retelling of a classic that delivers When you pick up a work whose title reveals that it is obviously fanfiction based on your favourite author’s best work, you enter apprehensively. The front cover claims it to be a retelling of Jane Austin’s classic. Questions and suspicions abound. ‘Will it pay proper homage to Jane Austin’s genius, which created a page-turner based on the stilted, indulged nothingness of the privileged, the wannabes and the idle rich of the Regency Period,or will it be lame trash that I will cast aside before the halfway mark?’ “Will the retelling in any way capture feisty Elizabeth, demure Jane, block headed Darcy, wicked Wickham and the foibles and follies of the minor characters,or will they be shallow imitations?” I wasn’t disappointed. I stayed up way past my usual bedtime because I kept turning pages. The context is so Logan, so bogan - so ‘not Regency’. Dr Darcy’s superior consequence is by virtue of his profession coupled with being from a wealthy Sydney North Shore family, whilst Elizabeth’s lower social status and intelligence is as an accomplished nurse. The demure Jane is a humble gym instructor; Caroline Bingley is an absolute piece of work and Mrs Bennett is an accomplished airhead who retains that innate cunning and tenacity when anything threatens getting her girls married off. The action didn’t disappoint, although my delicate sensitivities were a little jangled with the unbecoming twenty-first conduct and familiarity of the characters. I loved it and will line up for a reread.
