Biography
As a former elite-level 100 meter Sprinter, not-too-bad Baseball Pitcher and handy Soccer player, I learned all about meeting challenges and overcoming obstacles. In fact, it is this knowledge and my life-long love of sports that helped me overcome the biggest challenge of my life… Bowel Cancer.
Having been blessed with natural sports abilities, combined with dedication and determination, I was fortunate to become a Junior Champion sprinter (in both the 100 and 200 meters), as well as the Long Jump, in my native South Africa. Just two years later I took out the Senior Champion title in these same events.
I set a national record (Non-White Athletes only) of 10.4 seconds for the 100 meters, at a time when the World Record stood at 10.0 seconds (we, people of colour, were not allowed to compete against White People in South Africa due to the Apartheid laws).
At just the age of 22, however, recurring hamstring injuries and the depressive Apartheid Regime at the time, with sub-standard facilities forced upon us, cut short my athletics career at the time when I was nowhere near my peak… Oh what could have been!
I switched my focus to competitive Baseball, a sport at which I did well, and which put less strain on my hamstrings.
I moved to Australia in 1980 and concentrated on helping my sons become successful in their chosen sports careers of AFL, Tennis and Baseball. It was great fun.
At age 64, just 7 months before my retirement age, I was hit in the face with a Bowel Cancer diagnosis.
