Vlatka Herzberg

Biography

Vlatka’s passion is story. She uses sound and singing in creative ways to generate stories for children and adults.

Sound has always been an important part of Vlatka’s life. She started her writing career as a copywriter and Creative Director in radio. Her first produced radio play showed her what sound can do to enhance story. Now 30 years later, she comes full circle collaborating with Becky Parker Geist of Pro Audio Voices.

Many years ago, Vlatka used songs without words to generate stories that her children found entertaining and engaging, woven with lessons addressing their daily challenges. It started as a mother’s desire to help and nurture her children.

The stories spread to classrooms. Soon Vlatka was invited to events for adults too. Many have called Vlatka’s short stories folk stories, some have called them myths, or pedagogical (teaching) stories.

Vlatka has written short stories for schools, events and individuals. Topics have included racism, gender issues, friendship, goodness, truth and beauty, forgiveness, understanding and many other emotional and spiritual topics. As a freelance writer, Vlatka has written picture books, eBooks, comic books, and adapted a spiritual story for middle readers.

Vlatka is also the author of Aesop’s Fables eBook adaptations, The Brother and the Sister, The Buffoon and the Countryman, and The Bear and the Two Travelers, the comic book David, Software Engineer, and Ancient Stories by the Keeper of the Tales told in classrooms.

Smashwords Interview

What are you working on next?
I am working on Grandmother Moon and Other Mother Stories: Book Two. It has a couple of new Grandmother Moon stories, as well as two longer stories. One story, a favorite of mine, is called Mother Dragon Eyes' Secret and the other is called Mother's Magic Story Shawl. It too will be available as an eBook, print book and audiobook. Becky Parker Geist and I are partnering once again and Becky is recording the audiobook complete with character voices, sound effects and music. A real joy, and lots of fun to listen too!
Who are your favorite authors?
Patricia McKillip. Her fantasy fiction is very imaginative and her words are poetic. Lyn Marsh is the author of The Grand Tree and the blog http://www.conversationswithanoldone.com/. She is a mystic writer who evokes new ways of thinking and new ways of being. Another favorite author and storyteller is Jay O'Callahan, http://www.ocallahan.com/. I have had an opportunity to do a workshop with Jay and have seen him perform. There is magic in his telling! Neil Gaiman's children's stories and his graphic novels inspire me. I also really enjoyed reading Mary Pope Osborne's Magic Tree House series with young children.
