Interview with Carolyn Gold

Published 2014-12-22.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first one I remember was in junior high. It was about a man defecting across the Berlin Wall. Guess that dates me for sure!
What is your writing process?
I usually come up with a "what if" question. Then I let it simmer in my head for a long time until the who, where and when fill themselves in. The story itself always starts with the characters. Dragonfly Secret began with the question, "What if there were fairies here today? Where would we find them?" But the story developed around the people who found the fairies, and how they reacted.
How do you approach cover design?
Covers are hard! I try for something that will capture the mood of the story, and give an idea what it's about.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read everything from picture books through middle grade, young adult, and adult fantasy. I think YA is some of the best writing on the market right now.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up everywhere! Dad was in the Air Force, and we moved about every year and a half. I learned to love new places, new adventures and new friends. I also learned to respect and embrace all sorts of ideas and cultures, and developed a strong sense of independence.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My first book was published by a well-established publishing house and handled by a well-known agent. There were so many problems with the book's releases (both hardcover and paperback) that I decided I could do just as well on my own. I think Indie publishing represents the future.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Touching people's hearts and minds. If I can entertain one person, I've made their life a little better. If I can get one person to think about what matters, I've touched not only them, but everyone around them.
