Interview with Katrina Rose

Published 2018-10-03.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have thoughts and stories in my head that I need to get out for my own survival, so becoming an Indie Author seemed the most sensible and rewarding. I love being published by Smashwords, it provides a wonderful platform for it's authors with a tremendous amount of support.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't remember the first story that I read to myself, but I do recall the first storytime at school when I was in the second grade. The teacher would have us gather around him and sit on shag carpeting with a few bean bag chairs that we'd fight over to lay on. We'd listen to Mr. Delany read the fabulous tale, "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe". Still love the book to this day!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I'm so excited that Smashwords has added the ability to listen to the books that I create with audible. I'm looking forward to getting this accomplished for those readers who like to listen while they drive. I'm excited to tell others about the books that I write by creating a podcast. Smashwords has been terrific in helping make sure that I have a book worthy to be read, and that it's available to download from so many various distributors. This is fantastic! I'm looking forward to partnering with them as an affiliate and helping other authors grow their fanbase. https://www.facebook.com/Smashwords/
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Kansas City, Missouri and I always loved to read ghost stories as a little girl during the summer reading program. I've read all of the Little House on the Prairie books, and loved Beverly Cleary and Judy Bloom. After reading their books, I'd create my own series that was always similar to my favorite childhood authors. Too bad I didn't save any of the books that I did create.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing has helped me dig myself out the depression pit, which is something that I have struggled with most of my life. Perhaps, creative people often find themselves battling with some form of demon.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean the world to me. I especially love it when they can connect with the words I have chosen so carefully on paper.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a book that is very dear to my heart and soul, 'The Intuitive You', it should be available right here on Smashwords in the winter of 2018.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
For awhile getting out of bed was difficult due to depression, but then I found the joy of living in the present moment.
Who are your favorite authors?
Some of my favorite adulthood authors are also Indie Authors. There are really too many to name, but my favorite book is probably Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing I love to walk in the woods and meditate. I find nature very calming to the soul, and for me I am truly a tree hugger.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have a growing circle of Indie Author Friends. We love to help out one another and read each others work.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do not recall the first story I ever wrote, but I can recall writing handmade books in the second grade.
What is your writing process?
My writing process has been different for the two books I have written. I wrote Dream Detective in layers. I found writing Get Out of the Depression book easier to write when it was simple and to the point.
What do you read for pleasure?
I generally read self-awareness type books. Do it yourself repairs on the inner and outer me.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I like to read on a big screen so I'd have to say I prefer the computer.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I love to market with a passion, it's one of my first loves besides writing, and I hold a degree in marketing. I've been fascinated by social media marketing.
Describe your desk
My desk is considerably narrow but long. There is a book on intuition and the Webster's Dictionary sitting on the upper shelf of the desk. On the left there is a lamp and the right two large candle sticks with white candles. And then there is my computer which sits in the middle of the desk.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing when I was in the third grade. I stopped for awhile writing books, but I always wrote ad copy for some marketing purpose. Then I started writing again in my late forties.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest books is called, 'The Intuitive You' and it's really a self-help book on how everyone can increase their psychic abilities. I hope to have it in circulation this winter-2018. I truly believe we all have the gift of Intuition, but some of us utilize it more than others. Albert Einstein said it best, "The only real valuable thing is Intuition."
How do you approach cover design?
So far I've been lucky enough to have friends in high places that have helped create my book covers. I have two other books in the works, so it will be interesting what cover designs make it to becoming the actual cover.
