Interview with Leo Greene

Published 2018-07-07.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read fiction and non-fiction, but it has to be a good story. Non-fiction subjects I'm interested in include mythology, ancient history, travel and psychogeography.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I don't have a dedicated e-reader yet mainly as I'm short of the money, but also as I haven't lost my love of rummaging through charity shops for cheap second-hand books. I am a writer's worst friend, as I so rarely buy new books! The last book I bought new (in hardback) was Phillip Pullman's 'La Belle Sauvage'. If I ever make money from my writing, I can use it to support fellow writers.
However, to answer the question, I do sometimes download out-of-copyright works onto my laptop, or use the Guardian app on my phone
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
As an author - I'm still experimenting.
As a reader - word of mouth recommendations from friends whose judgement I trust
Describe your desk
It's a dressing table I made myself when I was 19. I wanted one but didn't have a lot of spare cash, so I joined an evening class (they were so cheap in the 1980s) and designed and made it from deal (pine). It's over 30 years old now, and the lid still isn't fixed to the body, but it functions well. It has two small drawers filled with things of the 'may come in useful one day' type, and old bits and pieces I've accumulated and kept for the memories.
It holds my laptop, some pens, and envelopes I use to scribble notes on before they go on the fire
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a detached suburban home with a big garden full of home grown vegetables. It was a mile or so from the landscape described in part 1 of 'A Pinch of Moonlight', and certain landmarks in the real world can be mapped onto Tanybryn in the novel. The view Blackbird describes in chapter 1, with the castle, the sea beyond and the islands in the channel, is the view from the Wenallt (fair wooded hill) to the north of Cardiff, where I was raised.
Having the freedom to roam the streams, fields and woodlands on the edge of Cardiff fed my imagination as a child.
I was raised on the Mabinogion and other legends. I think the influence is clear.
I also had a much younger cousin who was a very close friend, someone I mentored and had to get out of scrapes on several occasions. This relationship influenced Vicky and Demi-Lee's friendship. Heledd is inspired by the 'sensible girls' who were my friends when the 'party girls' left me behind for being too cautious
When did you first start writing?
I have always composed stories.
