Interview with Amber Lynn

Published 2013-10-30.
Describe your desk
I don't tend to work at my desk as I prefer my netbook in my lap on the couch. I do have a desk and it tends to be covered in mail and papers. Much more description would be difficult without digging it out from under said papers.
When did you first start writing?
May 2012 was when I first started posting things on wattpad.com.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The latest one published or the one I'm working on? Technically, I'm working on two and one is a continuation of a series. The other one started as one thing in my mind and has completely evolved into a monster that I'm not really sure where it came from. As for the book I just published, it too seemed to start as one thing and then evolve slightly. I seem to start with a small idea and think I know where it's going to lead and end up on the other side of the planet when I'm done.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I started playing out scenes to books in my mind and just couldn't hold them in anymore. I started writing chapters on wattpad.com and things quickly got out of control. In about 18 months, I've written 15 stories that were at least 50,000 words and I have jotted down plot lines for many more that I'm just trying to find time to start writing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Clearing room in my head. Sadly, I'm not kidding with that response. I have so many different ideas going on at a given time that being able to get even some of them out and on paper gives me a lot of joy.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are amazing because they help let you know you're doing something right. I'm a very shy person and I was terrified to even start publishing my work, but as soon as I started hearing from fans how much they enjoyed reading what I'd written, I became a lot more confident about what I was doing.
What are you working on next?
As I mentioned in response to another question, I'm currently multi-tasking by working on two books. I've started the third book in my Unlucky in Love series and a stand-alone vampire book. I'm pretty sure I know where the series book is heading, but the vampire based one is throwing me for some loops.
Who are your favorite authors?
So, so many and it all depends on what genre we are talking. I love Julie Garwood, Brenda Novak, Laurell K. Hamilton and Karen Marie Moning to name the ones that immediately come to mind. I promise I could list at least one hundred if I really thought about it.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The sun? I really enjoy life and don't need a lot of anything to get me out of bed in the morning.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Are you sure you want to know? I have a nine-to-five job that keeps me pretty busy and a mess of strange hobbies that cover the little amount of free time I find myself having. I love to cook/bake, dabble in arts and crafts, watch/attend hockey games and pretty much anything having to do with my Harley.
What is your writing process?
I usually start with some weird/obscure detail and start building a plot in my head based on that. I get an opening line worked out in my head and just start writing without really knowing where I'll end up. I like to let my characters drive and so far that has worked out really well for me.
How do you approach cover design?
When I first started I was also messing around with drawing, so the early stuff featured things I'd drawn. Now, I tend to find images and fonts I like and just start combining things until I'm satisfied.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I own a Nook Tablet, but have the Kindle app downloaded on all my computers and tend to read things on my netbook since it can handle any format of e-book I throw at it.
