Interview with Gloria Finch

Published 2015-06-18.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Bible, Giver by Lois Lowry, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobes by C.S. Lewis, The Miracle of Seed Faith by Oral Roberts, and all of Theodor Seuss Geisel’s books.
There are so many books, and authors, that I have read and enjoyed. I chose the above five books to express what I have learned, and love, about the writer’s ability to create an empowering written work.
Why do you read for pleaure?
When I was a child, I would read books just because I loved the stories that were being told, and how the words could teach, and move me emotionally. I was able to learn, and live through the words on the pages. So, reading for pleasure empowered me to go to a calmer place, and be happy.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I am still researching information that will help me find the best e-reading device. Some researchers says, the four big e-readers are; Barnes & Nobles’ Nook, Amazon’s Kindle, Kobo (Kobo mini, Kobo Glo, Kobo touch), and the Sony reader.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I am a new published author. I think it is awesome that I don’t have to recreate the wheel to find the best learning, marketing techniques. The Dog Ear Publishing website has excellent articles on how to market your product.
Describe your desk.
My desk is in the shape of a large “L.” I try to keep it organized, and have everything that I need to empower me to become a creative writer.
Where did you group up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in small community in the south. I learned to read at an early age, and loved reading.
During my quiet times when I wasn't reading or playing with my friends, i would create, and write stories, and plays. I remember being a happy child who participated in many activities such as, Sunday school every Sunday morning, summer camp, vacation bible school, youth choir, girl scouts. and playing all kinds of games during summer vacation. All of those experiences prepared me to become a writer.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
After sending my manuscript to the traditional publishers and being rejected, or, told that we are not excepting manuscripts at this time, lead me to research self-publishing, and learning to be successful at bringing customers to my product.
What’s the story behind your latest book?
I started this book about ten years ago, and put it aside due to all of the other activities that I was involved with. I have always created stories, and plays when I was a teenager. I have always felt sad when people did not have food or a home to live in. But then again, I never did anything to change the living status of those who needed help. After I retired from teaching, I had a lot of time to think, and research the plight of those who were considered to be poverty-stricken. I thought, what if I could use my teaching and writing experiences to write books for children using the theme ”I am my brother’s keeper.,” and help children to see how they could become their brother’s keepers. So, the first book (The Golden Teacup in the Attic) in the series Grandmother Pinkie, Louis, Jean, and the Golden Teacup was created.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I was looking for information to teach me how to best market my novel, and Smashwords appeared on the internet site, and I became interested in the information they were offering about indie’s who wanted to place their manuscript on an e-book. I am looking forward to learning and using Smashwords information to market my novel.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is that it allows me to have a tremendous purpose for the time that I am being creative. I enjoy when I am writing fiction in the third person omniscient point of view, and I become the narrator, and I am responsible for knowing the thoughts, and feelings of all the characters that I create in the story. Mostly, the greatest joy of writing for me is, how will my writing empower the readers to be the best person they can become?
