Interview with Gary Webb

What is your e-reading device of choice?
My personal favorite for e-reading is the iPad. I used an Android tablet at one point, then bought a Kindle, but now I definitely prefer the iPad, using the iBooks app.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Many of my books have been sold through word of mouth. That's because I love to give so many away. Once people have read them, they refer others to get online to order one for themselves. I've also used discount promotions to draw interest, promoting them through Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. I know that there are other sources, and I do hope to explore those more in the future.
Describe your desk.
I don't really even have a desk now. I do most things via computer, so I just sit in my recliner and type away!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My earliest years were nomadic. My dad was in construction, so we traveled to wherever he was working. Later, after starting school, we were back in East Tennessee, but I still changed schools several times. I grew up out in the country or as we called it, "the sticks." It was great to explore the woods and the area around Fort Loudon Lake. I didn't have many friends nearby, so I spent a lot of time alone, reading. I've loved reading since the time when I was in fourth grade. A neighbor was cleaning out his basement, and carrying out books of old books to throw away. I asked if I could have them. Suddenly, I had a library of my own with hundreds of old textbooks that were actually better than what we used in school. Until that point, I bearly got by in school. But suddenly, I was ahead of most of the other students. I had discovered the power of books, and it has changed my whole life.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote little pieces while in high school, but I didn't write my first book until 2012, when I was 64 years old.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The one I just submitted is about the meaning of Christ's death on the cross. Since I'm a retired minister, well, we never really retire. I'm writing things that I think need to be said. This particular book is very short, with just three chapters, but I think its value is in its simplicity.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I never even tried going through the regular publishers because I've seen too many people who were exploited by them. At least by being independent, I can use my books any way I choose. I don't have a lot of money, but I can still afford to put books into the hands of people who need them. I do that with my own writing, and also by making public domain books available through my website: disciplesindeed.net.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a book about lasting weight loss. It's actually about building the habits which cause us to maintain a healthy weight after losing it. I think too many people have been ripped off with some of the weight-loss fads out there. This will be simple, direct, and inexpensive for people to make work in their lives.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My wife. She had a horrific automobile accident a few years ago. It was then that I discovered what real love is all about. She had pampered me for years, but suddenly she was the one needing help and attention. It has been difficult for her, but I've grown a lot through this time.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Recently, I've been on a health kick. I've been walking, running, and working out at the gym. I would have never thought this could be fun, but it is. I also love the opportunities it gives for me to meet people who are different from those I've know through the years.

The heart of the message of Christ is focused on the cross where He died. Today, many people fail to understand what the death of someone 2000 years ago has to do with their life in the here and now. Without that insight, we can lose perspective about what God accomplished there. We can fail to appreciate its benefits for us as we walk through life's opportunities and obstacles.
