M. K. Theodoratus

Biography

Fantasy has been part of my life since I can remember, starting with a fantasy playmate who kept me company while I was locked on the front porch with my toys. My brother, Jerry, still hasn't forgiven me for naming my friend Jerome. Yeah, my mother was a copycat.

My formal introduction to fantasy came with the discovery of the Oz books. I read every one I could find, even if they were larger than the other books brought to our school from the library. I became a serious book buyer when I discovered my dad's army/navy store sold used paperbacks, including authors like A. L. Merritt, Andre Norton, and C. L. Moore--plus my favorite of favorites Leigh Brackett.

Now, I write fantasy about snarly elves, the Half-Elven of the Far Isles, or humans fighting invading demons in Andor.

Smashwords Interview

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't know if read is the right word. When I was three, I used to look at the National Geographic Magazine for hours. Adults shut my questions up by sticking the Geographic under my nose. Of course, when I came up for air, I had more questions.

Guess it's one reason I like exotic settings so much.
How do you approach cover design?
I hire it out. But I do insist on a legible font so dyslexics like me can read my covers.

Tales of Andor
Before and after the Demon Wars of Andor, humans have struggled with magic and over magic. The worse times were when demons from another plane tried to conquer Andor. Their homeland was growing too cold to successfully hatch their eggs. The demon princes opened portals into Andor for their attacks. Many demons escaped their commanders during the chaos of battle and hid by possessing humans. Others manned secret missions to support the invasion. In all cases, they preyed on humans

Smashwords book reviews by M. K. Theodoratus

  • The Vicar's Revenge on June 22, 2011

A little short on logic and motivation but loooong on smiles. Fun and worth the read.
  • The Brave Tale of Maddie Carver on June 25, 2011

Vulnerable character with a talent to see the dead is sought by the walking dead on Halloween. Story's a little descriptive at the beginning, but settles down into a good mood piece.
  • Delightfully Twisted Tales: Wisps, Spells and Faerie Tales (Volume Four) on July 01, 2011

Nice, well-written twists on popular themes.
  • Suicide Plunge on May 25, 2014

Suicide Plunge is an intriguing coming of age tale, sure to entertain. Growing up is always hard to do, but it's especially difficult for Billy Frank whose father brought shame to his family when he appeared to throw a previous year's Suicide Plunge. The Plunge is a race down a steep incline and across a river important to the Confederated Tribes of Eastern Washington state, and one of the highlights of the year. Billy dreams of regaining respect for his family by winning the Suicide Plunge. Arnold creates a suspenseful tale that has enough plot twists to keep the reader guessing. Overall the characters and settings are well drawn, but the manuscript could have done with tighter editing. An entertaining coming of age tale that'll keep you guessing.
