What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I wake up to write. I go to bed thinking about my characters, ruminating over their interactions. I wake up with a head full of ideas and I try to get them on paper before they are lost. I use any medium available, old notebooks, note cards, word processors, even dictations. In the afternoon and evening I assemble ideas into cohesive plots, run them by family and friends. My wife and my kids have been a huge help, offering opinions, suggestions, and freedom to write.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a full-time Dad. I cook, clean, do yard work. But I also love to volunteer. I spend one day each week on a maintenance crew for my local church. I'm the youngest guy there, and I enjoy spending time with retired electricians, plumbers, and carpenters--there is so much to learn from these skilled craftsmen. I also work at local food pantry several times each month. I've been helped in my life, and you have to give back. Recently, I joined a radio reading service. I go in once a month to read articles from local newpapers for the blind. It's helping me work up the nerve to create my first audiobook.
