Ruby Killingsworth relies on magic to keep her entertainment empire on top. When a ritual gone wrong robbed her of this magic, she wasn't about to take it lying down. Enlisting Loki's aid and commanding the band of supernatural henchmen he’s proffered, Ruby embarks to capture the magic of an ancient African gem.
While endeavoring to regain her powers, Ruby must also contend with the daily business of Goblin Records, her romantic designs on her billionaire neighbor, and the unwanted attention of the newly elected U.S. president. The return of her power and a relationship with the city's most prominent citizen would give Ruby all she ever desired. But magic comes with a price, politics are a dirty business—doubly so when a trickster god gets involved—and Loki is never on anyone’s side but his own.

Enlisting Loki's aid and commanding the band of supernatural henchmen he’s proffered, Ruby embarks to capture the magic of an ancient African gem.
As far as Ruby Killingsworth is concerned, life could not get any better. She is the wealthiest and most influential she’s ever been. Her entertainment empire continues to grow and thrive, her personal life is uncomplicated and fulfilling, and she continues to explore her unequaled magic. But when an email from the future arrives, she finds neither of her usual solutions adequate to the task.
Once upon a time, Ruby and Vivienne were rivals and enemies. Now? Theirs is a happiness neither one of them saw coming, and things between them are almost perfect. Almost.
Vivienne Cain has come to Cobalt City for one reason and one reason only: to confront the villainous sorceress who broke her friend's heart. Getting hired by said villain to purge her shiny skyscraper of an invading demon was not on her agenda, especially not given her messy past with possession.
The King in Yellow, manifestation of the concept of madness, has his sights set on conquest. He has hungered for Iteration 5169 for a long time, but one thing has been standing in his way: Cobalt City and its so-called superheroes.
