TEXAS 1990 The summer sun fried Steve Marcus's brain, adding to his emotional burnout. He dreaded going to work and hated coming home. The futility of caring for so many terminal patients had taken its toll. Life had become an endless parade of lawyers. Just as he thought life could get no worse, he was mobilized for Operation Desert Storm and sent to Saudi Arabia.

I had been wondering what I was going to read since completing all of the Hillerman novels several months ago, when I was presented with the opportunity to read Navajo Gold. Marcus Higi has picked up where Mr. Hlllerman left us. A treasure hunt evolves into an exploration of the cultural and philosophical differences between the Navajos and the belagana. The setting, the characters, and the plot took me on an adventure full of surprises reminiscent of what I had come to expect with Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee. I am generally not a fan of contemporary fiction, but Higi was certainly able to hold my interest to the conclusion. Except for some minor editorial flaws, the book was well written. The work is definitely a pleasant surprise, and I would recommend it highly to anyone who enjoys this genre. Zack Miller
