Reviews of The Pirate

Jack Turner is The Pirate. He's a former LA skate punk turned Coast Guard deckhand. He's a loveable knucklehead with a sordid past, but he's trying to get on the straight and narrow. As a teenager growing up in Los Angeles, he was arrested for stealing a car, but a lenient judge allowed him to avoid probation if he agreed to join the Coast Guard.

Reviews of The Pirate by Malcolm Torres

I was floored the entire time I was reading this!!! Many indie authors take a long time to get their setting, characters and plot set up. Some authors write a hundred pages and the plot is still not moving along. ---> Not this book. Torres puts you in the action with the main character on page-1 and then he stomps on the gas and does not let up. The scenes are all well crafted, the characters are constantly crashing ahead and my curiosity was building on every page. There were several times I wanted to kick the main character right in the ass! :^) Several times I was so mad at the main character I wanted to throw my Kindle down and curse him out . . . but I could not stop reading. This book is one of those rare reading experiences where I'd look up from the pages and gaze around at people on the bus or in the lunchroom at work and think to myself "WOW!" this story is amazing because it is totally transporting me into the character's lives.

There's lots of cops and robbers stories out there but this is the most brazen crime story I've ever read. It's refreshing because they're not your typical criminals at all. The writing has a cinematic quality, made me feel like I was in the scene. Also, very nice pacing, strong characters and a jolting plot set up. I couldn't stop reading and now I'm waiting for part 2.

Jack Turner is getting into bad trouble, but I'm laughing the whole time.

This really took me by surprise. After the first chapter I wasn't too sure about the main character, and as the story went on I didn't like him very much (but I couldn't stop reading). Then a few things happened in the plot and I started to like him. The thing is, the main character seems much more like a real person, and not so much like a fictional hero. He's like a lot of young guys who do something really stupid and risky and sometimes they get caught and sometimes they don't. For example, I once had a friend who managed a stock brokerage firm and committed fraud along with other managers by keeping their investor's money. He was my friend, I was ashamed of him, but I didn't hate him. I was actually kind of curious and wondering what the hell he was thinking. He went to jail for several years. Another example is I have a cousin who shot heroine for many years. He was the black sheep of the family, but now he's clean and he's just a character we all like but don't take too seriously. Well, the main character in this story does some bad things that I thought were kind of shocking and a bit funny (considering this is fiction). I don't know - it's hard to explain. He does some dumb things, some bad things, but he's not really a bad person, just a mixed up young guy. I guess my point is that I was fascinated by the story and I couldn't stop reading.

I've been on a kick reading stories about military men and women. Veterans these days have crazy experiences that average young people simply don't have. In this story we travel aboard a ship at sea off Key West. We are involved in the violent world of criminals, smugglers, police, government agents, ships, guns, gangs and it is all wrapped around an innocent young couple who I think are in love. I like the main character a lot, because I see myself in him. I especially like his crazy young attitude. He is getting into HUGE trouble. BIG TROUBLE! I can't wait to read the next part of this story to see what happens to the characters. There is a major collision about to happen in the next part of this story.

I am very impressed by the way this story swept me along. I was more than 30 pages in before I glanced to see what page number I was on. Totally engrossing read.

Every character, from the young coast guard sailor, the slacker beach bum, the teen girl left behind, the Miami criminals, they are all very realistic. I could not stop reading because the plot is so gripping. The writing style is very good and quite visual. Every twist and turn in the plot is shocking to some degree.

The first chapter came out as a story awhile ago, and when I read it I thought for sure it was the beginning of a much larger work. I'm happy the author has expanded the plot. The words gritty, brilliant and real come to mind when trying to review The Pirate. The character is a dopey young guy who you love to hate. I just wanted to kick him in the butt and tell him to quick being such a #%@!-up. The author has captured a young man who joins the Coast Guard for all the wrong reasons and through a comical series of adventures and mistakes lands in some deep trouble. I can't wait to read the next section and find out what happens.

I'm hooked on this series. I could not stop once I started reading the first few pages. The action is fast and true to life. The tech is real, but not overpowering. There are several characters all living on the wrong side of the law. I'm very curious about where this story will go next. I have a feeling it will get worse before it get's better for the main characters. Mr. Torres, please publish Part II right away so we don't have to wait too long.
