Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Growing up in rural Eastern Cape has been central to my youth fiction as well as my short stories more generally.
When did you first start writing?
When I was 12 years old.
What motivated you to become an author?
The excitement of seeing the characters coming to life as well as the challenge of creatively engaging with real life situations.
What is your writing process?
Difficult. I can only write for a few minutes and then I must walk around. I also rewrite many drafts.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote? What was it about?
It was about 2 young boys, a black and white boy growing up just before the end of apartheid.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Striving for perfection and pushing boundaries.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Diggity Dog - about a dog that dug up people's gardens. It was funny.
What are your five favourite books, and why?
Mind Power - it teaches you how to live
1421. The year China discovered the world - it provides a different perspective to global history
African Pens 2011 - it is an excellent collection of short stories
The Caine Prize for African Writing collections - they are ground-breaking stories.
The Siyagruva Youth Series - just because I wrote some of them ...
What do you read for pleasure?
Mainly short stories and novels.
What do your readers mean to you?
They are my 'looking glass' and are respected.
Who are your favourite authors?
Zakes Mda; JM Coetzee; Siphiwo Mahala and all South African authors ...
