Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born an bred in South Africa, at a place called Imbali Unit 3, situated in Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal. As I grew up, I was surrounded by authors who encouraged writing in indigenous languages, and those included my father and colleagues at the time. I am now based in Gauteng, Johannesburg and the issues surrounding me as a South African citizen, a woman and a mother still inspire me.
When did you first start writing?
I contributed my first two short stories in an anthology of isiZulu short stories, ‘Wathint’ Imbokodo’ edited by Dr Nakanjani Sibiya, in 2005. Shout out to Sotobe!
