A delicious read. Four stars because I could not put it down, could not wait for the following books and could not get the characters out of my head in between reading sessions. It reminds me of Terry Pratchett's Guards! Guards!
Bravo Ms. Buroker. The ending brought tears to my eyes and a lump to my throat. I believe I re-read that last scene half a dozen times, hoping to catch every intonation and thus make my peace with the end of the story. I look forward to the further, or past, exploits of the whole crew as I will miss them dearly.
The novel starts off by plunging readers head first into the authors' world of Turuna. Persevere through the visually detailed but mentally child like introduction good readers for a mind stretching coming of age tale follows. We become Butu as he learns to see beyond the magic of childhood and sets his world on a new path to the future. A journey well worth reading along for.
