A M Russell

Biography

I write science fiction novels with themes of time travel and alternate realities.
I live in Yorkshire; the middle of Britain.
A life long fan of fantasy and science fiction - a geek who has read "Lord of the Rings" several times. My passion writing stories began early on after hearing "The Lion the Witch, and the Wardrobe" at Junior School. I have a persistent curiosity that keeps me writing. It is my passion, my obsession, and the way I keep my mind focused and calm. I have a breakneck speed for writing, but edit much more slowly!
I love films, The Time Machine; Matrix Trilogy; Inception; anything that bends the mind. I would love to see one of my creations turned into a film; I explore the world space in my books as if it is a movie.

Best thing about writing? Being an Original.
Best drink? A nice cup of Yorkshire tea.

Smashwords Interview

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I am a fiercely independent person who likes the "Do It Yourself" approach in nearly everything in life. I have always wanted success through my own efforts. I am comfortable with working on my own on the rock face of the writing adventure. So being an Indie Author really suits my personality! I don't get freaked out by the technology or the challenge of formatting. It's an exciting adventure.
Discovering that sites on the web existed to self publish was an amazing revelation. I like to be a control freak, and pedantic about every detail. I can indulge myself totally, and truly be who I am.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords allowed me to do what I wanted without paying a penny upfront. I don't have money to throw at my dreams. But even if I did this ethical way of building a path to success is setting things right in my mind. I feel happy and calm publishing on this site. I think that the stress of going on dubious sites that exploit you undermine the flow of creativity. Here, at Smashwords you are free of the concern that there is any hidden weirdness trying to trick you. I can get on with writing. It is helping me learn how to be better at things like formatting. I have to make the effort and persevere and that helps me to be a better Indie Author.

  • Tinytown on Nov. 01, 2012

A completely brilliant novel! Inspired over the top comic futuristic sci-fi. I nearly walked into a lamp post while reading this on my android phone. Devilishly well observed characters; a crackingly good narrative, with astute political overtones; this world is one that I wish existed in more than one book. Sort of drug induced Jilly Cooper sex/equestrian scenes; a victimized good guy, a hideous ex wife, and something you really ought not to do with a hedgehog! I will recommend this to everyone. When you get another book out I'm buying it! Thanks Darby, you made me laugh so hard I couldn't breathe. Looking forward to your next book.
  • What You Ask For on Nov. 10, 2012

A cracking good read. Exciting and tense action. I like the fiery female who cannot be kidnapped without doing damage even when outnumbered. You feel right in there with the action. The characters are believably verbal, and the tension is mounting in this thrilling new nano novel. Keep following this one!
  • Forty Leap on March 31, 2013

A beautifully written evocative story. The longing and sense of loss and fear in the face of a terrible burden of time travelling away from everyone you have known and loved, is described by an often quite ordinary man. One who becomes extraordinary to his own surprize. A story that has at its heart a description of what it means to be human at its worst and best. My only negative: the ending seemed truncated. I would like the story told of how he finally found his way home. But still five stars! I was glued to the chair all Sunday afternoon reading this. I will buy any other book by this author. A talent to watch.
